I am very excited to be assisting one of my mentors, Elaine Retholtz, with teaching this course. I was introduced to mindfulness through an MBSR course a decade ago and it was a life-changing experience. I initially took the course for the professional experience, but instead it launched me on a personal journey that impacted all areas of my life including my professional practice.
MBSR was developed by Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn at the UMass Medical School over 40 years ago. Some of the skills learned in MBSR include:
- Practical skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations
- Techniques for being physically relaxed and at ease
- Gentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension
- The ability to be aware of the interplay between mind and body in health and illness
- The ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease
- Greater ability to decrease the physical, mental and emotional effects of societal stressors of sexism, racism, homophobia, xenophobia and gender inequity among other challenges
The course is being offered through New York Insight Meditation Society and you can learn more here.
